Introduction
Replacing a Spicer SPL Series crosshead is very simple and involves 3 activities: removing the old crosshead and analyzing the crosshead and driveshaft; installing the new crosshead, evaluating the driveshaft assembly again and finally, lubricating.
-
-
Remove the screws from the cover plates;
-
Using a press, press the covers until the crosshead body touches the inside of the eyelet. Pay attention to the leveling and alignment of the press so as not to damage the sleeve, flange or terminal, use a support that allows the cover to pass through;
-
Cover seals can prevent them from coming off easily, after pressing, use pliers to remove them;
-
Repeat the operation on the opposite side;
-
When removing the covers, check that all rollers are in place, examine the crosshead body, that there are no marks or excessive wear. These signs indicate other problems with the Cardan, such as misalignment or lack of lubrication.

-
-
Do not reuse covers, screws and plates. The Spicer Kit provides all the necessary accessories; Check that there are no impurities or oxidation on the fixing eyes of the gloves, flanges or terminals;
-
Remove the crosshead covers being careful not to misalign or remove the rollers;
-
Position the crosshead with the grease fitting facing the tube and the grease fitting tips to the sides, never towards the eye;
-
Position the cover on the lower eyelet perpendicularly, do not use oil or grease on the eyebolts;
-
-
In the press, use a support on the opposite side and press the fork, flange or terminal until the eyelet touches the assembly template, In this process, as well as during disassembly, it is essential to pay attention to the leveling and alignment of the assembly;
-
Pre-assemble the cover on the opposite side, if necessary, use a polyurethane hammer;
-
-
-
-
Position the plates and screws, if necessary, use a polyurethane hammer and tap gently to correctly position the plates;
-
-
After tightening, check that the crosshead moves freely and without noise;
-
-
-
BEFORE REMOVING THE CARDAN, MAKE MARKS TO ENSURE ALIGNMENT.

Inadequate lubrication or reuse of coupling parts or screws can cause the gimbal to fail or even separate the gimbal from the vehicle. A separate vehicle gimbal can cause an accident and even death. Don't take any chances with security.
