Introduction

Replacing a Spicer Central Bearing is a simple procedure and involves 6 steps: removing the Cardan, disassembling the Tip, disassembling the Central Bearing, installing the Bearing and Central Bearing, assembling the Tip and installing the Cardan in the vehicle.

  1.
Never remove the Cardan without first making sure that the vehicle is braked or chocked;

    • Remove the crosshead clamps;

    • On Series 1410: Release the Cardan Sleeve from the Sliding End; Our 1550 Series Cardan Shafts: Before removing the Bearing, loosen the nut of the Fixed Tip;

    • Loosen the screws that fix the Bearing Stand to the chassis;

    • Remove the Cardan from the vehicle.

  2.
Remove the rubber pad from the Bearing, if necessary use a lever or spatula;

With the Gimbal outside the vehicle, do not use hammers or steel mallets to loosen the Gimbal Terminal, impacts can fracture the parts. Use a suitable extractor and, if necessary, use a polyurethane hammer;

    • If it is difficult to remove the bearing, do not use saws or chisels to cut it, impacts can damage the tip or even unbalance the Cardan. The use of torches or heat to dilate the bearing is also not indicated, the variation of heat can generate warping. Use a bearing extractor (pulley bag).

  3.
Thoroughly clean the components and housings before assembling;

Fit the Central Bearing assembly manually, if necessary, use a polyurethane hammer to adjust the bearing positioning. Mount the central bearing on the Cardan Tip using a tubular extension supporting the bearing by the metallic inner ring, taking care not to damage the bearing seal.

    • Always wear the proper safety glasses when performing any type of maintenance. Failure to wear safety glasses could result in injury and/or partial or complete loss of vision.

    • Always be careful when working with products that have sharp edges.

    • Inadequate lubrication or reuse of coupling parts or screws can cause the gimbal to fail or even separate the gimbal from the vehicle. A separate vehicle gimbal can cause an accident and even death. Don't take any chances with security.

    • An important part of the work and operation of your workshop is the correct disposal of the products that will be replaced. Do your part and together we contribute to a sustainable future.
