Introduction
Replacing a Spicer Center Bearing is a simple procedure, and involves 6 steps: removing the Cardan, disassembling the Tip, disassembling the Center Bearing, installing the Bearing and Center Bearing, assembling the Tip and installing the Cardan in the vehicle.
Parts
-
-
Never remove the Cardan without first making sure that the vehicle is braked or shod;
-
Before removing the Cardan, mark the components to ensure alignment, use a ruler if necessary;
-
Remove the Crosshead clamps;
-
Release the Cardan Sleeve from the Sliding End;
-
Loosen the screws that secure the Bearing Stand to the chassis;
-
Remove the Cardan from the vehicle.
-
-
-
Remove the rubber cushion from the bearing, if necessary use a lever or spatula;
-
If there is any difficulty in removing the bearing, do not use saws or chisels to cut it, as impacts may damage the tip or even unbalance the Cardan shaft. The use of blowtorches or heat to expand the bearing is also not recommended, as the variation in heat may cause warping. Use a bearing extractor (pulley puller).
-
-
-
Clean the components and housings thoroughly before assembly;
-
Fit the Central Bearing assembly manually, if necessary, use a polyurethane hammer to adjust the bearing positioning. Mount the central bearing on the Cardan End using a tubular extension, supporting the bearing by the metal inner ring, taking due care not to damage the bearing seal.
-
-
-
Carefully observe the markings made on the Cardan for correct alignment;
-
Fit the Sliding Tip to the Cardan Sleeve;
-
Install the Bearing in the Chassis and tighten the Stand screws. Make sure that the central bearing is not deformed after being fixed. Misalignments can cause damage to the bearing rubber cushion;
-
Assemble the Crosshead. Position the clamps. Apply 162.7 to 183 Nm of torque to the clamp bolts.
-
-
-
CHECK MARKINGS TO ENSURE ALIGNMENT.

Under no circumstances should you attempt any repair or maintenance for which you are not trained or if you do not have the tools and equipment to perform the repair.
-
Always wear proper safety glasses when performing any type of maintenance. Failure to wear safety glasses may result in injury and/or partial or complete loss of vision.
-
Always be careful when working with products that have sharp edges.
-
Improper lubrication or reuse of coupling parts or screws can cause the driveshaft to fail or even separate from the vehicle. A driveshaft that is separated from the vehicle can cause accidents and even fatalities. Do not take risks with safety.
